Statement by Justin Gatlin
New York, New York (July 29, 2006)

"I have been informed by the United States Anti-doping Agency that after a relay race I ran in Kansas City on April 22, I tested positive for a banned substance. I cannot account for these results, because I have never knowingly used any banned substance or authorized anyone else to administer such a substance to me. In the course of my entire professional career, I have been tested more than 100 times, including during the 2004 Olympics Games in Athens, the 2005 World Athletic Championships in Helsinki and the many major international competitions in which I have participated. All of the tests this season, including the out-of-competition and in-competition tests conducted just before and after the race in Kansas, were negative."

"I am particularly sensitive to this issue since, while competing at the University of Tennessee in 2001, I tested positive for a banned substance that was contained in Adderall, the medication that I had been taking for attention deficit disorder from the time I was a child. That experience made me even more vigilant to make certain that I not come into contact with any banned substance for any reason whatsoever. Since then, I have been involved with efforts to educate people about the dangers of using drugs and would never do anything to disappoint my fans and supporters. It is simply not consistent with either my character or my confidence in my God-given athletic ability to cheat in any way. Since learning of the positive test, I have been doing everything in my power to find out what caused this to happen. I have been and will continue to cooperate fully with USADA as it moves forward with the process it has initiated and hope that when all the facts are revealed it will be determined that I have done nothing wrong. My parents raised me with love, and a very clear sense of right and wrong, and I would never do anything that would disappoint them in anyway."

"Intense Training Pays Off in World Record"
"Hello!! to all my track fan supporters, and website visitors. I last visited with you on May 17, 2006 giving you my disappointing view on the revision of my World-Record time change.....well that was then, and this is now.....I feel that I'm in great shape, my training is going great....my last wins at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, OR and the Reebok Grand Prix in New York City can attest to how great shape my intense training have me in because as you noticed both times weather conditions certainly were not in my favor. Most of you may remember on May 12, 2006 two hours after setting the World Record in Doha,Qatar I hopped aboard a plan for Indianapolis, I had committed to come to Indy to help promote the Outdoor National Championships and it was important to me an to the meet that I fulfill that committment to promote my sport and our Outdoor National Championships......I had a great time and was definitely looking forward to coming back to Indy......"Well guess what I'm back!! arrived here yesterday, June 18,2006.....and I would love to see all my supporting fans fly-in, drive-in, or just plan tune-in to ESPN2 on June 24th 6:00-8:00 pm and June 25th 5:00-7:00 pm Est. because Power, Speed, Grace Track and Field stars from across America will compete here in the sport's most anticipated event of the year. "Can you imagine running a city block in less than 10 seconds? well that's what I did to tie the 100-meter world record, "Sooo!check us out" me and the nation's top men and women and junior track and field athletes are coming to Indianapolis Wednesday through next Sunday for the AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and the Finish Line Junior USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Nearly 1,000 athletes, with the help of coaches, support staff and local volunteers, will attempt to break national and world records at the Michael A. Carroll Stadium at IUPUI. Indianapolis is a great sports town and certainly has its love for speed--from the 500-mile Race to the explosive Colts offense. My USA Track and Field teammates and I hope to bring another influx of speed and athleticism to Indy with our love for running fast. I am often asked what it's like to be a professional track athlete and to be able to run the 100 meters under 10 seconds flat. "The truth is, it's very cool and I encourage everyone to try it. Unfortunately, not everyone can run sub-10s (smile), so I hope can show all my fans, and as many people as possible what that looks like when I step on the track to compete at the AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Wednesday through Sunday at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. "Sooo!! what's it like to be a World Record holder?? "It's an absolute rush! It really is. But...believe me it doesn't just happen. Like most things in life, it requires a lot of hard work, dedication and practice. What most people don't see or understand is that athletes such as myself work ot six hours a day, six days a week. We lift weight every day and head to the track for some of the hardest workouts you'll ever see. And as much as I love to run, practice is not fun at all!! But that's what it takes to be the best. When I was in high school, I was a state champion, but I don't think anybody thought I would get a World-Record holder. I took my share of lumps at the University of Tennessee, too. But I'm on top of the World now, and that's one of the great things about track and about life. If you put in the work, have the dedication, the right attitude and the support of your family, friends, coaches and managers, you will also succeed. If I fail, it's because I did something wrong out there in terms of my execution. If I win, It's because of the hard work paying off and the guidance and support of my team behind me........So my fan support is part of the team, continue stopping by and leaving your marks of encouraging thoughts, prayers to remain healthy and injury free.....Thank you, I Truly Thank all of you.....I feel your spirit....J-GAT
